What is Point-In-Time Recovery and Disaster Recovery to your business???
Technically the "Business Continuity Plan" refers to the means by which loss of business may be avoided.
The "Business Continuity Plan" ought to define the business requirements for continuity of operations.
It defines the business requirements, such as Point-In-Time Recovery, for a "Disaster Recovery Plan".
Technically, the "Disaster Recovery Plan" deals with the restoration of computer systems with all attendant software and connections to full functionality under a variety of damaging or interfering external conditions.
In daily practice Business Continuity often refers to disaster recovery from
a business point-of-view, or dealing with simple daily issues, such as a failed disk, failed server or DB, possibly a bad communications line. It is often referred to as the measure of lost time in an application, possibly a mission critical application.
In daily practice Disaster Recovery often refers to major disruption, such as a flooded building, fire or earthquake disrupting an entire installation. The issue of Business Continuity certainly arises when Disaster Recovery is required.
High Recovery Scenario: A disaster happens, A disaster happens, a meteor hits a diskdrive and its data. A new diskdrive is purchased. Tapes located offsite are brought onsite, mounted to a tape drive and the data is transferred to the new diskdrive. Business is up and running in 24 hours.
High Availability/Business Continuity Scenario: The same disaster happens. Redundant data is on a redundant diskdrive. The system is designed such that immediately when a device is unavailable, the redundant device is accessed automatically. Eg, If DB2 gets a -904 Resource not available, the redundant device might be accessed. The user might see a 0.5 second increase in response time but is not aware, and not made aware, that a disaster even occurred.
